Oak in the Pinoche Valley - "The Tree of Life"

Posted by
Monterey John (Hollister, CA, United States) on 1 March 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I decided I liked this image of the old non-ever-green California oak in the Pinoche Valley. So, I went to work on it.

A bit of tone mapping to even out the exposure. That makes noise, so de-noise the image. Save as a tif. Run it through Lightroom and Photoshop for finishing touches like clarity, color balance etc. Tone down the saturation. Sharpen a bit.

Voila! Nothing to it!

Thanks to my old friend Lorraine up in Canada for the title "The Tree of Life."

I love the way the tree is holding the remaining moisture around it's roots and that is the only green we see in these otherwise brown California hills. Lorraine's suggestion of a title is perfect!

Remarkable image, John. Your processing brought out the textures and drama of a beautiful scene. I like the story behind it with Lorraine's offering a well suited title.
I see this in print and framed as well.

My brother has suggested another title, "The Ox Bow Incident." Now there is a contrasting theme, and not a bad one.

Beautiful scene John, I see you are living in Hollister now? We have quite a few landscape photographers living here (or nearby). Uwe Steinmueller moved here also. No lack of beauty to photograph.

Stunning scene--I love the how the grass seems to glow in the light and the interesting branches against the bright blue sky.

The result is a beautiful image, with a tree that really takes centre stage and some spectacular cloud detailing to enhance the rest of the beauty.
