I shot this image on the old coast road which runs through the hills between the northern entrance to the Big Sur Valley and Bixby Creek to the north. Before Route 1 was built in the 1930s, it was all there was. Must have been interesting, especially in the rainy season.
But the reason I am putting this shot up is the high contrast between the shadows and the sky. The shadows were dark, almost black is the image that exposed the sky properly, a bit lighter when the trees were right and okay when the sky was blown out. This is where HDR shines. The blending of three different exposures allows the entire scene to be seen as the eye sees it. The sky, trees and shadows can all be brought out.
This image, to get it right, still needs some more work. But it was far enough along to make my point about HDR.
