Ye olde Smithee

Posted by Monterey John (Hollister, CA, United States) on 11 August 2010 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Ft Jim Bridger, western Wyoming: Colorful old dude. He is a retired Baptist preacher. (Kind of looks like you'd expect one to look, doesn't he?) The blacksmith shop at Ft Bridger, named for mountain man Jim Bridger (who incidentally is buried but a few feet from my dear friend Charlie Blackmar in Independence, Mo.) Anyway, this old preacher learned the craft in his retirement and is a volunteer at the Ft Bridger State Historic site.

Well worth a visit if you are ever out in western Wyoming just off I-80.

Great quote from this guy, "If you don't learn to live with Mother Nature out here, she'll kill you."

Maybe not the place to spend winter.

I'm smiling ... he looks like his 'fire & brimstone' has done him in! :D
His cotton shirt gives him away as a docent 'somewhere' ..... great portrait, John!

I love this shot. I'd like to see it in either sepia or bw tones, too. A timelessness to the pose and expression. As a Southerner by birth and grace, I may not be Baptist, but as a preacher myself, I can appreciate his "look" and expression.
