Frisnel Lens of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Posted by MontereyJohn (Salinas, California, United States) on 18 June 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

This image shows fairly well the cut glass Frisnell lens of Pigeon Point light. These incredible lenses with hundred of prisms cut into them were once the primary device for producing enormously powerful beams from rather small light sources. Most of these lenses are now in museums having been replaced with high intensity electric lights. Once a year in mid-November they relight the old lens at Pigeon Point which draws thousands to see along with hundred of photographers trying, with emphasis on the "trying," to capture the scene.

Thanks for dropping by and sharing in the joy I take in this art of photography. Enjoy your visit, and if you have any comments or useful criticisms, please feel free to share them.
