Bixby Bridge at Sunset

Posted by MontereyJohn (Salinas, California, United States) on 10 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

While spending the past couple of evenings trying to re-invent the wheel, i.e. attempting to come up with some new ideas for shooting this famous coastline, I literally stumbled over this scene.

I had been just south of the famous Bixby Bridge working on getting the golden light of a late winter afternoon for which California is famous. I was not particularly getting anywhere with my efforts. As the sun finally eased toward the horizon, I packed it in and headed back north toward home. As I approached the bridge, the sun was dipping into the sea. High up on the hills behind the bridge I could see where there was still sunlight. I wondered in the brief moment that I had whether I could possibly race up the dirt road that runs up the canyon the bridge crosses and get a view overlooking the bridge back toward the sea and catch the sun as it set. I made a quick decision and decided to go for it. I drove my old Toyota hard up that rutted road about a 1/2 mile to where it turned and paralleled the bridge. Sure enough there was the sun in its dying moment. I quickly mounted a wide angle lens as I wanted to catch this painted sky and the grasses in the foreground. I knew I would not have time to switch lenses. At best I would be able to get four or five frames.

I got out of the car and stood at the canyon's rim, pointed and shot.
